Telefonica, South America, is a telecommunication and broadband provider in Latin America and Europe. This organization is a former telecommunication monopoly in Spain. It is third largest communication organization in whole world. Telefonica was established in the year 1924 as ‘Compania Telefonica Nacional de Espana', this name was used until 1997 before telecom liberalization. Telefonica is the largest telecommunication service provider in whole Spain with over 75% population using its service. In 1997, Spanish government fully privatized Telefonica and in July 2007, European commission placed a huge fine of 153 million Euros on this organization for harming the interest of Spaniards due to its improper activities in Broadband area. Apart from all these past problems, Telefonica was able to regain its status in telecommunication industry and was soon called as Speedy Telefonica. Telefonica is spread all over America and Europe, with branches in Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Slovakian countries, Spain, United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Colombia, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, United States and Canada. Telefonica also works in China with collaboration with China Unicom.
Telefonica is Public Sector Company and is owned by capital investment funds. Important stockholders that share Telefonica are Banco Bilbao Vizcaya (14.961%), La Caixa (5.442%) and Criteria Caixacorp (5.019%). Apart from these share positions, organization holds 75% of Dutch TV organization known as Endemol. Besides telecommunication, Telefonica also sponsored Renault's F1 racing team until departure of Fernando Alonso to McLaren Mercedes. Telefonica also sponsored O2 and BMW Sauber with respective sponsorship amount of $18 million, $15 million and $23 million. Other sponsorships consists of 2000 session of Ford Focus world Racing Championship, Spanish Soccer teams like Valencia CF and Real Zaragoza. In early 2000s they also sponsored Suzuki Bike racing team at MotoGP. Because of this all round performance besides telecommunication Telefonica is also known as Speedy Telefonica worldwide.
The consider position for network neutrality, Telefonica CEO Cesar Alierta called a meeting at Bilbao, Spain during February 2010 where they decided to charge Google and many other search engines for using Telefonica source and network. They came to the result that these search engines were using platform provided by Telefonica without contributing in total expanses of the organization and this trend should be changed in coming future. Telefonica started to grow its roots in China during 2009 when China Unicom agreed to a $1 billion dollar agreement. In 2011, both parties further extended their agreement of $500 million dollars, according to this agreement Telefonica will power 9.7% stake of China Unicom in China and china Unicom will hold stack of only 1.4% in Spanish organization. |
